What is a Patient Advocate?

Patient advocates help patients navigate the healthcare system and receive the care and resources they need.

A patient advocate can help with :

• Communicating with healthcare providers
• Setting up appointments
• Getting financial, legal, and social support
• Working with insurance companies, employers, case managers, and lawyers
• Organizing support from others
• Running errands

Patient advocates can help patients: Be more involved in their healthcare, Receive better outcomes, Make informed decisions about their care, Express their preferences and concerns, and Feel more in control of their healthcare journey. Help you at appointments by writing down the conversation and speaking up for you.

Patient advocates are not the same as those you assign to speak for you on your advance directives (i.e. health care proxy). However, the advocate should know who the health care proxy is and who to call in case of emergency.

We are paid directly by the patient or caregiver. We can travel with you to attend appointments, provide in-home visits, write letters for you, make telephone calls, review your bills, and help you find resolution or additional support. We charge a mileage fee for travel if needed, and an hourly rate.

What Patient Advocates Are Not

Patient advocates are distinct from individuals appointed as healthcare proxies in advance directives. However, they collaborate with the healthcare proxy and are aware of emergency contacts.
